Newton’s Law of Emotion

Posted on Updated on

Sir Newton

I guess we could call this Sir Farouk’s Law of Emotion. Basically, indulge in my paradigm shift. If you are used to me writing some political stuff, indulge me while I engage my engineering background a little bit. Lets see if I don’t get lost with what might be one big analogy.

So Sir Isaac Newton proposed laws that govern motion of bodies and forces acting on these bodies. Notice how I share the title Sir, with one of the greatest minds in history. pauses to gloat in this brief delusion. Back to the topic, Sir Isaac Newton wrote The Laws of Motion. The Basis of what is Newtonian/Classical Mechanics. These laws explain motion of objects on a macro scale but fail to adequately explain the motion of microscopic objects, hence the need for relativistic Physics and Quantum mechanics. I d leave the details of that to the physicists. That’s the general gist of it sha.

So Newton’s Laws of Motion are,

First law: The velocity of a body remains constant unless an external force acts upon the body.

Second law: The acceleration a of a body is parallel and directly proportional to the net force F and inversely proportional to the mass m, i.e., F = ma.

Third law: The mutual forces of action and reaction between two bodies are equal, opposite and collinear. This is also expressed as, “For every action there is an equal and opposite action”

I figured that since Mr Newton was one of the greatest minds in the history of the world, I could apply these laws to the realm of emotions,

Emotions are likened to velocity. They are vectors (directional quantities) that keep us moving in our daily lives. We can have uniform emotion much like velocity, our emotions are constant, our emotions can also change direction and can change magnitude. People who constantly change emotions are bipolar or Craze people. Forces are liked to events, Things that can cause a change in our emotions/velocity. Much like acceleration is the rate of change of velocity, so is the tendency for good things or bad things to happen to us seen as the rate of change of our emotions.

So now the Laws of emotions,

First Law

The emotion of a person about anything remains constant while in a particular state of mind unless acted upon by an external force or event.

Lets take it that you are sad about anything. Lets say you are sad about a break up, as long as you remain in the state of mind of self-pity and regret, your emotions will remain constant unless you do one of two things. You consciously decide to change your state of mind, think about happier things. Engross yourself in work and other things. The other option is that an external event occurs; something happy that forces your emotions to change. You meet someone new, get a raise at work, achieve one of your life long goals, or become stinking rich. When a momentous happy event occurs to someone it knocks him or her off a sad emotion.
Similarly, when you are happy. For instance you got a raise or a promotion at your place of work. For as long as you remain in the state of mind that your promotion was a good things, you will remain happy. But as soon as you change your state of mind to one of discontent and envy over another person who got a bigger raise/promotion or someone in a position higher than you, your emotion changes from happy to sad.

Second Law
The tendency for a person to experience certain emotions over and over again is proportional to the prevalent thoughts in their mind and accompanying events.

This is similar to the premise that you are what you think. A person who constantly thinks negative thoughts about himself, others or situations is more likely to encounter negative events and has the general disposition of a sad person. Likewise a person who constantly thinks positive thoughts about himself, others or situations is more likely to encounter positive events and has the general disposition of a happy person. It is this law that explains how a poor person can be happy and a rich person miserable. A poor person can be happy because he/she is content with what they have and they are hopeful about their future. A rich person can be miserable if he/she is constantly thinking negative thoughts.

Third Law

For every emotion expressed by a person there is an equal emotion expressed towards them.

This can be called the law of relationships. Not necessarily romantic relationships but relationships between people and how we relate with each other. I propose that when you are in a relationship with someone, be it friend, girlfriend, brother, sister, uncle etc. The emotions you express or project through your actions to the person are the emotions you get back. If you are always happy around someone (and no I don’t mean fake happiness), there is a tendency that the person will be happy around you. If you are sad around a person or always belligerent, I bet you they will be sad/belligerent around you as well. Human relationships are a subtle give and take of emotions. If you are nasty to your waiter, he/she will be nasty on your food and spit on it.

So that’s all folks, Do you think these laws can be sufficiently applied to emotions and human relationship? Sometime in the near future if I don’t forget I will try to apply Einstein’s theory of relativity to the realm of human emotions.

Cos this is what I imagine physics sounds like, I leave you with this

    Interesting……

I agree with the second law, it’s the same principle the Bible refers to in Proverbs 23:7 ” As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he…”

I also agree with the third law, it’s called an Emotional Bank Account (EBA). Every relationship (familial, platonic, romantic etc) has an EBA between the parties involved and a person will always respond to you based on the deposits or withdrawals you make into the E.B.A that you share with them.

    Nice blog….

Thanks for reading. I always quote As a man thinketh…but sadly I never knew the book and chapter. I like the idea of an Emotional Bank Account, never heard of it but it sounds on point.

Ha.. Isaac Newton meets Sigmund Freud….. Interestingly it all fits together nicely.. If only one had found this connection during high school physics lessons..

LOL, You know I bet we ll eventually find out that physics not only governs the physical but the spiritual realm as well.

I have alway been a lover of sir Isaac Newton since i learned of his three Laws of Motion in grade school.

I think his Laws make all the sense in the world to me. I often quote His third Law whenever i want to stress a point.

Thanks for commenting and dropping by the blog. You are right, the third law is really universal and can be used anywhere.
